Isel Old Park

The River Derwent winds through Isel Old Park with the kind of unhurried grace that makes you forget you're only a few miles from Wigton. This is a proper nature reserve - ancient woodland meets riverside meadow, the sort of place where you'll actually spot something rather than just trudge past manicured paths.

What you get is a working landscape. The old park sits on land that's been managed for centuries, and you can read that history in the mix of oak and ash, the way the river bends through open ground. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - kingfishers are regular here, and the tree-lined sections are good for spotting nuthatches and woodpeckers if you're patient and quiet. The walks are straightforward rather than demanding, following the riverside for the most part, so families with younger legs cope fine, though older kids won't be bored by the terrain.

How long you stay depends on your pace. A couple of hours covers the main trails without rush. Best visited in spring when the migrant birds show up, or autumn when the light sits differently on the water. Summer gets its share of walkers - nothing frantic, but you won't have the place to yourself.
