Isabella Heap

Isabella Heap is a modest fell near Ashington that rewards the effort with proper panoramic views across Northumberland. It's not a dramatic crag - more a steady moorland climb - but on a clear day you can see right across the Tyne Valley and towards the Cheviot Hills. The walk takes about an hour each way depending on fitness, and you're likely to have the place largely to yourself, which is rather the point.

This is walker territory, not sightseers. The appeal is the straightforward hike and the sense of being genuinely away from it all, even though you're only a short drive from Ashington. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog with nothing dramatic to break up the climb. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - just the walk itself.

Timing matters. Visit on a grey day and it's honestly rather dull. But catch the light right and you'll understand why locals bother with it. Spring and early summer are best for underfoot conditions. The peak can get boggy in winter.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Sandy Bay or Church Point, both within a few miles of Ashington, Isabella Heap makes a solid morning walk before heading to bigger attractions elsewhere. It won't eat up your whole day, which is exactly its charm. Low expectations often mean pleasant surprises.
