Iron Hill

Iron Hill sits just outside Godalming, a modest rise that rewards the short walk with surprisingly good views across the Surrey and Hampshire borderlands. It's not a dramatic summit - you won't find yourself gasping for breath - but the ridge walk itself is rather pleasant, and on a clear day you can see proper distance.

The hill itself is basically a walking destination. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no fuss. You park near Godalming and walk up. The appeal is straightforward: decent countryside views, a bit of exercise, and the kind of spot where you can actually hear yourself think. Families with kids aged eight and up will enjoy it without complaint, though younger children might find the walk a bit dull without a specific destination waiting at the top. It's the sort of place walkers use as a warm-up rather than a day's main event.

Going midweek in spring or autumn works best - weekends can get busy with the Godalming crowd. Allow ninety minutes for a relaxed walk and a sit-down at the top.

If you're basing yourselves at Adhurst Yurts or Little Cowdray Farm Glamping, both within a short drive, Iron Hill makes a decent half-morning option before heading back for lunch. Don't expect anything grand, but it's honest walking country with real views. The sort of place you'll actually return to rather than tick off a list.
