Iron Down

Iron Down is a proper summit walk, the sort that rewards you with Hampshire views without requiring mountaineering skills. It's a modest peak by any standard - you're looking at around 280 metres - but the climb from Godalming direction feels genuine enough, especially on a muggy afternoon. The walk itself is the whole point here. You get woodland paths that feel properly remote despite being within spitting distance of the Surrey border, then breakout views across the Weald when the weather plays ball.

Historywise, the name tells you something was mined here once, though don't expect dramatic ruins or interpretation boards. It's more about the sense of place - knowing folk were digging iron out of this hillside centuries back - than any heritage attraction. The views alone justify the effort, particularly if you time it for late afternoon when the light turns golden.

Walkers and geography enthusiasts will get the most from it. It's not a tourist trap with a car park and visitor centre - you're doing proper legwork. Allow a couple of hours there and back depending on your pace and whether you potter about at the top. The peak is free, obviously, being a natural feature.

After a morning here, you're well-positioned for the glamping circuit nearby. Adhurst Yurts and Little Cowdray Farm Glamping both sit within 6 miles, making this an excellent addition to a rural Hampshire base. The walk itself is best tackled between late spring and early autumn when the paths dry out properly.
