Ionic Rotunda

You'll find this curious circular structure standing alone in the Sussex countryside, a bit of architectural oddness that stops you mid-walk. The Ionic Rotunda is exactly what its name suggests - a small, perfectly proportioned round building with classical columns, built in the late 18th century and looking rather out of place in rural West Sussex. It's the sort of thing a wealthy landowner built because they could, a folly really, and it's genuinely striking to stumble upon.

The site itself is modest - you're not looking at acres of grounds or grand gardens. But that's rather the charm. You walk up, take a look at the architecture, appreciate the craftsmanship, and move on. Twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you're the type who photographs everything. It works brilliantly as a lunch-break detour if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots like Wakestone & Wild Glamping or Woodfire at Westerlands, or you could easily combine it with a longer ramble across the South Downs near Pulborough.

History enthusiasts will get more from it than families with small children - there's not much interactive about it, and kids will get bored fairly quickly. But walkers heading through the area should absolutely know it's here. Free admission, as far as we can tell, and you can view it from outside even if access is restricted. The real draw is the oddness of it - proof that eccentric landowners have always built whatever took their fancy, rules be damned.
