Inverness Marina

The waterfront at Inverness Marina is one of those places that sneaks up on you - you're wandering through the city centre and suddenly you're by the water watching boats bob on the Moray Firth. It's a proper working marina, not some theme-park version of nautical life. You'll see fishing boats, leisure yachts, and the occasional seal if you're lucky. The setting itself is the draw here: the marina sits right against Inverness's compact town centre, so you can grab a coffee from one of the waterside cafés and actually have somewhere pleasant to sit with it.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The riverside path extends along the Ness in both directions, so you could easily spend a couple of hours wandering upstream towards the castle or downstream towards the sea locks. There's something calming about the rhythm of a working marina - the creak of moorings, the calls of oystercatchers, boats moving with the tide.

It's free to walk around, which is the whole point. An hour is enough unless you're the type to sit on a bench for ages watching the water, and that's not a criticism - sometimes that's exactly what a holiday needs. Timing-wise, any time of year works, though winter light can be moody and atmospheric. If you're camping at Coulmore Bay Holiday Park or Bunchrew Caravan Park, both just a couple of miles out, the marina makes an easy evening stroll into town. Less of a destination in itself, more of a reason to spend an hour in Inverness that actually feels worthwhile.
