Intersection

Winchester's public art space sits right in the heart of the city, which means you can stumble into it without much planning at all. Intersection is a contemporary gallery run by the council, showcasing work by local and regional artists - paintings, installations, sculpture, sometimes video pieces. It's not enormous, so you won't spend hours here, but that's rather the point. Pop in for twenty minutes or an hour depending on what's on.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Holden Farm Camping & Cafe is genuinely excellent, and Hookpit Farm isn't far either - and you fancy a cultural fix without leaving Winchester proper. It's free, which helps. The space has that slightly rough-around-the-edges feel that actually-good contemporary galleries often have rather than the sanitised corporate vibe.

Families won't find it boring if the kids are old enough to focus for a bit, and it's a natural pairing with Winchester's cathedral and high street if you're doing a day trip. Worth knowing: opening hours can be a bit irregular, so check the Winchester council website before you go. Summer shows tend to be stronger than winter ones, in my experience. Don't expect to lose a whole afternoon here - think of it as a proper stop-off, not a destination in itself. That said, if you're in the area and like looking at what local artists are doing, it's absolutely worth ten minutes of your time.
