Ingsdon Hill

The walk up Ingsdon Hill rewards you with views across Dartmoor that feel properly earned. It's not a massive peak - nothing on Dartmoor is compared to the Lake District - but the climb from Newton Abbot direction gives you enough effort to feel like you've done something worthwhile.

What you get at the top is moorland stretching in all directions, that distinctive Dartmoor mix of open heathland and distant tors. On a clear day you can pick out the texture of the landscape for miles. On a damp day, which is most days, it's atmospheric rather than panoramic.

This is solid walking country, nothing technical. Allow a couple of hours return depending on your pace and how much time you spend at the summit. Bring a map - the paths aren't always obvious and Dartmoor has a habit of looking the same in every direction once you're up there.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Toddlers and prams, less so. It's the sort of place where you go for the walk itself rather than facilities at the top - no tearoom, no visitor centre, just open air and space.

If you're staying at Oakmoor Touring Park or Dornafield just down the road near Newton Abbot, Ingsdon works as a half-day outing. It's close enough for a morning ramble without eating your whole day, and different enough from the lower-level caravan park walks to break up a holiday properly. Worth the effort for walkers; not worth the trip if you're after cafe stops and interpretation boards.
