Ing Barn Wood

Deep in the Lancashire countryside near Clitheroe, Ing Barn Wood is proper woodland walking territory - the kind of place where you actually feel like you've left civilization behind, even though you're only a few miles from town. It's a forest, so expect mature trees, forest floor paths that get muddy after rain, and the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you came to the Ribble Valley in the first place.

Walkers will get the most from it. This isn't a manicured nature reserve with interpretation boards and gravel paths - it's proper woodland that rewards a bit of exploration. You're looking at anything from a gentle 30-minute wander to a couple of hours if you fancy getting properly lost in the trees. The paths vary in condition, so decent boots are worth bringing.

It works well as a midweek escape if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Cross Lane is closest at three miles, or you've got Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site if you want something a bit bigger. It's the kind of spot to slip into between visits to Pendle Hill or days in Clitheroe town itself, rather than a destination in its own right. Families with older kids who actually enjoy being in woods will be fine here. Toddlers might find it a bit relentless. Go early morning or late afternoon if you want any chance of spotting deer or other wildlife. Free access appears to be the case, though there's no formal visitor infrastructure, so come prepared.
