Inchcape Park

The walk down to Inchcape Rock is one of those coastal adventures that feels properly wild, especially when the wind's whipping off the North Sea. You're heading toward Arbroath, that working fishing town just south of here, and the path takes you through moorland before opening up to dramatic red sandstone cliffs and the bell tower perched right on the water's edge.

It's not a long expedition - maybe forty minutes there and back depending on the tides - but it packs in genuine drama. The bell tower itself dates back centuries, though what you see today is mostly restoration work. On a clear day, the views down the coast are worth the walk alone. When it's grey and windswept, which is often, it's genuinely atmospheric.

Historians and photographers will get the most from it; kids might find the scramble down entertaining, but the site's fairly exposed and there's not masses to do once you're there. Allow two hours if you're being thorough. Check tide times beforehand - the whole thing's more rewarding when the rock's properly visible.

It works well as part of a wider coastal exploration around Arbroath. If you're staying at The Grange Glamping about six miles inland, this makes a proper half-day outing without feeling too remote. The walk's free, obviously, and you'll likely have the place to yourself unless you hit a busy summer weekend.
