Impington

East of Cambridge sits Impington, a gallery that punches well above its weight for a village venue. It's the sort of place where you stumble in expecting twenty minutes and end up lingering for two hours, which tells you something about the calibre of work on display.

The gallery focuses on contemporary art and craft, with rotating exhibitions that feel genuinely considered rather than random. Local artists get space alongside established names, and there's a real sense of curatorial vision rather than just filling walls. We found ourselves in front of pieces we'd never have sought out deliberately, and that's when you know a gallery's doing its job properly.

It's not enormous - you could see the whole thing in 45 minutes if you rushed - but the scale works in its favour. No exhaustion, no crowds, just direct access to the work. Families with older kids who actually like looking at things will find it absorbing. Walkers heading out from Cambridge make it a natural stopping point, and it's close enough to Fen End Farm or Hempsall Farm to slot into a rural holiday without too much backtracking.

Admission details are thin on the ground online, so ringing ahead is sensible. Go midweek if you can. The village itself offers nothing else, but that's rather the point - you're coming for the gallery, not to browse gift shops or grab lunch. Bring that from Cambridge. Proper worthwhile if you're in the area and actually care about seeing things.
