Illgill Head (Wainwright)

The walk up Illgill Head rewards you with views across Wastwater that justify the slog. It's a proper Wainwright - not one of the famous Lake District peaks, but substantial enough that you'll feel like you've earned your lunch at the top.

Starting from near Holmrook, the route climbs steadily through moorland and scree. Wastwater spreads out below as you gain height, and on a clear day the whole western fells open up. The summit itself is windswept and sparse, which is exactly why it's worth doing. No crowds, no tea rooms, just you and the fell.

This is a walker's walk, not a casual stroll. You're looking at a good three to four hours round trip depending on fitness and the state of the ground underfoot. It can be boggy lower down, so decent boots are essential. Families with younger kids might find it a bit much, though capable fell-walkers aged ten-plus would manage fine on a good day.

The climb works brilliantly as part of a wider Wastwater loop if you're staying at Fisherground Campsite - just a few miles away. Pair it with a gentler afternoon exploring the lake shore itself, which has a different appeal entirely. Weather matters here more than most walks. A grey day can feel miserable; sunshine transforms it. Check the forecast before you commit.
