Illgill Head (summit)

The walk up Illgill Head isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the views. This little-known fell sits just inland from the Cumbrian coast near Holmrook, and on a clear day the panorama from the summit stretches across the Lake District fells to the west and right out over the Irish Sea.

It's the kind of place that rewards walkers who don't mind a proper slog without much in the way of maintained paths. The ground gets boggy in patches, and the final push to the summit is genuinely steep - your calves will know about it. But here's the thing: you won't find crowds. That's largely because Illgill Head sits slightly apart from the main hiking circuit, so you get space and quiet rather than a conveyor belt of ramblers.

The summit itself isn't dramatically high - you're looking at around 600 metres - but the exposure and the views make it feel more serious than the height suggests. On misty days, forget it; the appeal vanishes entirely. You need decent visibility to justify the climb.

Historically, this area has mining heritage buried in its bones, though you won't see much of that on the walk itself. Allow two hours for a round trip from the nearest parking areas, a bit longer if you're combining it with other Lake District peaks.

Camp at Fisherground Campsite just a few miles away if you're making this part of a longer Cumbrian fells trip. Illgill Head pairs well with exploring the quieter western Lake District, away from the honeypot valleys further east.
