Icklingham Roman settlement

Walking across the fields near Bury, you'll find what remains of a Roman settlement that once sprawled across this corner of Suffolk. Icklingham was a substantial site during the 1st and 2nd centuries - the kind of place where soldiers and settlers traded, lived, and left behind pottery shards and foundation stones that archaeologists are still piecing together. There's not much to see on the ground itself, which is honest work. The site is largely open field with the odd interpretive board telling you what lay beneath your feet - a fort, civilian buildings, roads. Others might find it a bit underwhelming visually. You don't need long here - thirty minutes or so, maybe an hour if you're properly engaged with the history. The real appeal is combining it with West Stow, just a couple of miles away, where the Anglo-Saxon village reconstruction actually shows you buildings you can walk around. Kings Forest Caravan & Camping Park is barely over a mile down the road, making this a natural add-on to a wider Suffolk heritage tour. Free access, informal site - turn up whenever suits you. It's the sort of place that rewards readers of history books and punishes those expecting flashy visitor centres.
