Ibbidge Coppice

The woodland here is proper old-school English coppice - the sort of place where you can actually see the management history written into the trees themselves. Ibbidge Coppice, just outside Hereford, is a working woodland where the hazel and oak have been cut and allowed to regrow for centuries, creating that distinctive multi-stemmed look you don't see much anymore.

It's a quiet spot. No visitor centre, no café, no designated paths with interpretive boards - you're essentially walking through someone's working woodland. That's both the appeal and the limitation. Woodland enthusiasts and anyone with a proper interest in coppicing will find it genuinely interesting. Kids will have a decent time scrambling about among the trees for an hour or so, though there's nothing specifically laid on to hold their attention.

The walking itself is straightforward enough, though you'll need to watch your footing after rain. Allow an hour for a decent wander, longer if you're stopping to identify plants or just sitting quietly. Spring is lovely when the woodland floor comes alive. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic with the growth. Winter reveals the structure of the coppice best.
