Hyde Coppice

A modest woodland block just outside Weymouth, Hyde Coppice is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a day around. It's proper forest - deciduous trees, dappled light, the works - and if you're staying at one of the touring parks within spitting distance, it makes a decent hour's walk without the faffing about of heading miles inland.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of. What you get is woodland paths that wind through mixed woodland, a bit of peace away from the seaside crowds, and the kind of quiet that feels earned after a morning on Weymouth's beach. It's not dramatic or rare - you won't find anything that'll make you gasp - but it's genuinely pleasant if you're after a gentle woodland amble with the kids or the dog.

Walkers will appreciate it more than sightseers. This isn't a destination; it's a pocket of green that justifies a morning's outing if you're based nearby. From Bagwell Farm or East Fleet Farm, you're barely ten minutes' drive away, making it a natural add-on to a beach holiday without eating up precious time.

Go when the light's soft - early morning or late afternoon - and expect to be alone or nearly so. Autumn's probably loveliest here, when the canopy turns. Summer can feel a bit closed-in, and winter's muddy but rarely impassable. Free, obviously, and no time limit. A proper local spot that rewards a quiet detour.
