Hurtle Pot

The walk down to Hurtle Pot is half the adventure. You're looking at a proper limestone cave system tucked into the Yorkshire landscape near Carnforth - the kind of place that makes you feel like you've stumbled onto something the tour buses haven't reached yet. The cave mouth opens up with genuine drama, and inside it's all narrow passages, low ceilings (watch your head), and that particular damp smell that means real geology, not some theme park knockoff.

It's a scramble-and-squeeze sort of experience rather than a walk. Bring a torch. The cave itself isn't vast - you can explore it in thirty minutes or so - but it rewards the effort. Water flows through parts of it depending on rainfall, which adds another layer of interest. Kids old enough for adventure will love it; very young ones might struggle with the confined spaces.

The nearest decent base is Carnforth, which gives you access to half a dozen campsites within easy reach - Philpin Farm Campsite is barely half a mile away if you want minimal faffing. If you're staying at one of the glamping setups like Primrose or Ribblesdale Pods further out, it's a pleasant half-hour drive to get here.

No official facilities that I could find, so come prepared. Check conditions beforehand - heavy rain can make parts inaccessible. It's free to visit, which is the only sensible price for something this rough around the edges. Worth the detour if you're doing a cave crawling weekend in the Dales.
