Hurt Hill

The walk up Hurt Hill from Godalming takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and frankly it's steeper than the modest height suggests. You'll gain nearly two hundred metres, which means proper leg work on the final push. Once you reach the top though, you've got proper views across the Surrey Hills and beyond - on a clear day the vista stretches far enough to make the huffing worthwhile.

It's a solid half-day walk rather than a full expedition. Most people tackle it as part of a longer route through the local woodland, and the ground can be boggy after rain so go prepared. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the gradient without complaint. Walkers genuinely appreciate this one - it's unpretentious, the reward-to-effort ratio is reasonable, and you won't find yourself queuing at the summit.

The nearest facilities are in Godalming, so grab a coffee before you start. There's no charge for accessing the hill itself, and you're essentially walking through open countryside. Spring and early autumn are the best times - summer can get a bit muggy on the climb, and winter makes it unnecessarily slippery.
