Hundred Stone

A Bronze Age stone circle sitting quietly in the Somerset countryside, a few miles south of Yeovil - though you'd be forgiven for missing it entirely if you didn't know where to look. The site consists of around a hundred stones (hence the name), arranged in what archaeologists reckon was a ritual or ceremonial space dating back something like 3,500 years. It's one of those places that rewards a bit of effort to find.

The stones themselves aren't particularly tall or dramatic - nothing like Stonehenge. What you get instead is a sense of scale and purpose: the circle's footprint sprawls across the landscape, and standing within it you start to understand why Bronze Age people chose this spot. The views across the Somerset countryside are genuinely lovely, rolling and green.

This is proper country rambling territory, really. Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will get the most from it - it's not a destination for people wanting to tick off a quick photo opportunity. Expect to spend an hour or so there, including the walk in and a proper look around. It's free to visit and open access, though there's no visitor infrastructure, so bring what you need.

If you're staying at Long Hazel Park a few miles away - a solid caravan and camping spot - Hundred Stone makes a good half-day excursion to break up your week. The walk itself is part of the appeal. It's not flashy, but it's genuinely worth the trip if you're interested in how people actually lived thousands of years ago.
