Hull Fair

Hull Fair is one of England's longest-running travelling fairs, and it arrives in Hull each October with all the noise, lights, and mild chaos you'd expect from a proper traditional funfair. The whole thing takes over a large stretch of parkland, and you'll find everything from vintage wooden rides that have been operating since the 1920s through to modern thrill machines that'll turn your stomach inside out if you let them.

It's genuinely brilliant if you're after a day out with kids - the sheer scale of it means you won't run out of things to do, and there's proper fairground food everywhere, from candyfloss to hot dogs. Fair warning though: it gets rammed, especially weekends, and it's pricey. You're paying per ride, and rides aren't cheap. Adults without children should probably give it a miss unless you're after nostalgia or you're partial to a bit of carnival atmosphere and don't mind spending a fair bit.

Based near Beverley, it's worth timing around if you're camping at Manor Farm Camping or Butt Farm Caravan just outside the city. The fair runs through October typically, so plan accordingly. Allow a full afternoon minimum, though families tend to stay until early evening when the rides light up properly. Wear comfortable shoes - there's a lot of walking between attractions, and the ground gets muddy if the weather's been wet. It's old-school British entertainment done right, even if your wallet takes a battering.
