The Hull & East Riding Museum sits in Beverley, a market town that feels properly removed from the usual tourist circuit. It's the sort of place where you can spend two hours productively or dash through in forty-five minutes, depending on how deep you want to go.

The collections tell a genuine story about how ordinary people lived around here. If you're travelling with kids, the interactive elements work well enough to keep them engaged without feeling patronising. The museum is free to enter, which is genuinely excellent. Allow a couple of hours if you're thorough, or ninety minutes if you're just grazing. Beverley itself is worth an afternoon anyway - the Minster is spectacular, and the town has proper character without being oversaturated with tourists.
