Hughenden Park

The woodland around Hughenden is proper Chiltern countryside - ancient beech trees, chalk streams, and paths that actually feel like they go somewhere rather than loop back on themselves after twenty minutes. You're looking at a genuine nature reserve where the walking matters: there's genuine habitat here, not just mowed grass with a "conservation area" sign.

It works brilliantly if you're based at one of the camping spots near Marlow - Penn Meadow Farm or Shillingridge are close enough that you can do this as a half-day outing without it feeling like a trek. History buffs might recognise Hughenden Manor from the National Trust signs; the reserve sits alongside it, though the manor and the wild bits operate separately.

The trails vary properly. Some stretch to a couple of hours for walkers who want to clock decent mileage; others are short enough for families with younger kids who'll get tired of pointing at leaves. Spring's excellent if you want bluebells and birdsong, though frankly any time the weather's dry works. Summer can be a bit rank with the undergrowth if you're not keen on pushing through vegetation.

Entry appears to be free, which is refreshing - no car park fees, no gift shop guilt. Allow at least ninety minutes if you're doing it justice; rushing through defeats the purpose. From the camping sites it's a reasonable drive, and pairs well with a Marlow riverside walk if you're making a proper day of it. Not a destination in itself, but a genuine addition to a Chilterns break.
