Hucking Estate - Woodland Trust

The Woodland Trust runs this patch of ancient woodland just outside Maidstone, and it's a proper tonic if you're tired of manicured gardens and visitor centres with gift shops. What you get is woodland as it actually is - old trees, mossy paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why people bother with the countryside at all.

It's ideal for families who don't mind their kids getting mud on their shoes, and walkers after something low-key rather than strenuous. The estate has several routes through the trees, and you can easily spend two hours here without feeling like you've overdone it. History types will find something too - there's genuine old woodland here, the sort that's been here for centuries, not planted yesterday. The paths are fairly well maintained but expect roots and uneven ground; not suitable for pushchairs.

Admission is free, which keeps it honest. There's no cafe or facilities, so bring water and a snack if you're planning a proper wander. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter, though the woodland doesn't really get rammed regardless.

If you're staying at Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club or Chegworth Mill Glamping - both within a couple of miles - this makes a straightforward morning or afternoon walk without needing to drive across the county. It slots nicely into a park holiday where you want at least one day off-site, but something low-effort. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, less worth planning a trip around.
