House Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a formal attraction, House Wood sits just outside Northampton and gives you exactly what it says on the tin - trees, paths, and peace. The forest floor is soft underfoot, which is lovely if the ground's been wet, and the canopy does a good job of blocking out the noise from the nearby roads. There's no visitor centre or cafe, which some will see as a downside. I'd say it keeps things authentic.

You're looking at a straightforward woodland circuit that most people can knock out in 45 minutes to an hour, depending on pace and how many times you stop to look around. The paths are reasonably well-maintained, though they can get muddy after rain - bring decent footwear. Kids who like scrambling over fallen logs and spotting birds will get something out of it, but if you're after a dramatic walk or proper views, you might feel a bit underwhelmed.

The real value here is proximity. If you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Billing Aquadrome or Riverview Park are both within four miles - and you need a quick leg-stretch between other activities, House Wood fills that gap. It's not a reason to plan a special trip, but it's well worth the short drive from Northampton if you've got an hour spare. Free to access, no facilities, no fuss. Sometimes that's exactly what you want.
