High Covert

High Covert is a proper woodland walk just outside Northampton - the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss. It's a modest forest with good tree cover, dotted paths, and the kind of quiet you don't expect this close to town. Nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point. You're looking at maybe an hour to two hours depending on how far you fancy wandering, with enough variation in the terrain to keep things interesting without being punishing.

The appeal here is straightforward: if you're camping at one of the nearby parks - Billing Aquadrome, Riverview, or Sywell Country Park are all within touching distance - and the weather's holding, this beats sitting in the caravan. Families with younger kids will get a decent walk out of it, and there's enough woodland interest for the naturalist types to keep their eyes busy. Dog walkers particularly seem to rate it.

Getting practical: it's free access, no faffing about with opening hours or tickets. Early morning or late afternoon tends quieter if you prefer solitude. Spring's lovely when the undergrowth is fresh, though autumn brings decent leaf colour if you're the sentimental type. Winter's fine too - just muddy in places after rain, which honestly adds to the charm rather than detracting from it.

It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but as a half-day excursion from any of the Northampton caravan parks, it's well worth the short drive. Beats the attractions trade, anyway.
