The Oaks

Ancient oak trees dominate this woodland patch just outside Northampton, and walking through it feels like stepping into a different century. The forest is properly old - we're talking specimens that were already mature when the English Civil War kicked off. Towering trunks, gnarled branches, and that particular smell of damp earth and leaf litter that makes you remember why forests matter.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than a formal visitor attraction. No visitor centre, no marked trails with helpful signs, just trees and the paths people have worn into the ground over decades. That's its charm, really. You won't find crowds here queuing for photos or gift shop tat. Families with young kids will get a decent hour out of it - there's enough to explore without it becoming a trudge - though older children might want more of a challenge. Serious walkers and history types will find it genuinely compelling, especially those interested in how England's ancient woodlands actually look and feel when you're inside them.

Billing Aquadrome and Grendon Lakes are both within 5 miles if you're basing yourself at a holiday park in the area. It works as a morning wander before heading to one of the lakes for the afternoon, or a quiet escape if the parks get too busy. Northampton's close enough for supplies and proper meals, but The Oaks itself asks nothing of you except time and comfortable shoes. Free to visit, naturally - it's a wood, not a theme park.
