Hound Haven at Shaw

If you're staying near Chippenham and fancy something a bit different from the usual park walk, Hound Haven at Shaw is worth a detour. It's a working dog rescue centre that actually lets you meet the animals - proper hands-on, not just looking through gates. You'll see dogs of all sizes and temperaments being cared for, and the staff are genuinely passionate about what they do here.

The place works best if you've got kids who've been pestering you about dogs, or if you're simply the type who wants to support animal welfare while you're on holiday. An hour is enough time to have a wander around and get the measure of things. Fair warning: it can tug at your heartstrings. Some of these dogs are waiting for homes and it's hard not to want to take one back to your caravan.

I'd suggest calling ahead to check visiting times before you roll up - rescue centres aren't always set up for drop-ins, and you want to make sure the dogs aren't being stressed out by constant visitors. The location is handy enough from Devizes Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Glamping at Little Thornham Holidays if you're based that way.

It's free to visit, which is brilliant, and there's usually a shop selling dog toys and treats if you want to make a small donation to the cause. Not essential holiday viewing, but genuinely worthwhile if animal sanctuaries are your thing.
