Horse Shoe Hill

The walk up Horse Shoe Hill rewards you with proper views across the Pennines - the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people move to Lancashire and never leave. It's a modest peak by most standards, nothing that'll take your breath away in terms of altitude, but the ridge walk itself is the real draw. You get moorland underfoot, and on a clear day the visibility stretches for miles.

This is one for walkers who don't need a mountain to justify the effort. From Skipton it's accessible enough for a half-day outing, and families with teenagers will find it manageable without being a slog. The paths are well-trodden, though they can be boggy after rain - proper footwear matters. Allow two to three hours depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Draughton Heights is closest at just 1.6 miles - this makes a natural morning walk before heading back for lunch. Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite at 4.9 miles would give you a day's exploring the area with this as your main event. The moorland around here is glorious in late summer when the heather's flowering, though it gets busy with walkers when the weather turns.

It's free to walk, naturally. Best avoided in thick mist - half the appeal disappears and the paths become tricky. Decent boots and a map are non-negotiable.
