Horse River Green

The walk along Horse River Green starts quiet and ends absolutely cracking - a proper slice of Essex wetland that most people driving past on the A10 haven't got a clue exists. You're looking at marshland, reed beds, and if you time it right, a decent variety of water birds. Nothing flashy. No visitor centre, no gift shop, just the sound of water and the occasional rustle of something in the reeds.

It's genuinely worth an hour or so if you're based near Royston or staying at Pightle Farm Campsite down the road. Walkers will get more from it than most - the paths are straightforward enough, muddy in winter, and you'll spot kingfishers if you're patient and quiet. Families with small kids might find it a touch dull after twenty minutes unless they're proper nature spotters. The light in early morning is lovely if you're there when it opens, whatever time that is.

Bring binoculars. Don't expect facilities - nearest shops and tea are back in Royston. It's free to access, which is the main selling point really. The reserve sits nicely between a campsite trip and a proper day out, the sort of place you potter round before heading back for lunch. Not life-changing, but if you're in Essex and want fresh air without crowds, this delivers exactly what it promises.
