This forest near Stockbridge is the sort of place that doesn't announce itself with visitor centres or car parks, which is exactly why it works. The trees here are old, the paths wind through mixed woodland, and if you're lucky you'll spot deer moving between the undergrowth.

It's ideal for walkers who want a genuine forest experience rather than a managed nature reserve. An hour gets you in and back out; half a day means you can explore the deeper tracks without rushing. Families with kids aged eight and up will find it decent - muddy boots guaranteed, which some parents love and others dread. The main thing is there's no facilities, so bring water and come prepared.

Geographically, Horse Lynch slots nicely into a wider Hampshire walking circuit. It's close enough to Stockbridge to combine with a pub lunch there, and both The Meadow Glamping and Stockbridge View are within reach if you're basing yourself locally. Early morning or late afternoon visits beat the midday crowds, though honestly crowds aren't really a thing here.

The woodland itself is free - no fees, no entry gates. Spring's when it truly sings, bluebells everywhere, but even in winter the structure of the trees and the network of paths make it worth a visit. Not dramatic or famous. Just good, reliable woodland.
