Horse Close Hill

The walk up Horse Close Hill rewards you with proper Pennine views across the rolling moorland that surrounds Skipton. It's not a massive peak - nothing like the Lake District fells - but it's a decent afternoon outing if you're camping nearby at Draughton Heights or one of the other sites within a few miles.

From the summit you get sightlines across the Yorkshire Dales, which on a clear day makes the modest climb feel worthwhile. The terrain is moorland rather than woodland, so there's nowhere to hide from the weather. Go in decent conditions.

Walkers will appreciate this more than families looking for a quick stroll. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on your pace and fitness. It's the sort of place that matters most if you're already staying in the area - not something you'd drive hours out of your way for, but absolutely the kind of local walk that makes a week in a Lancashire caravan park actually memorable.

The nearest proper base is Skipton, which has shops and cafes. Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is less than six miles away if you want proper facilities with your camping. Several smaller sites dot the landscape between here and the moor itself.

Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst of any cloud that rolls in. The exposed moorland can feel bleak in poor visibility, so timing matters.
