Hopton Castle

The ruins of this medieval stronghold sit quietly on a hillside just outside Craven Arms, commanding views across the Shropshire landscape. What remains is a cylindrical stone tower - the keep - surrounded by earthwork defences that tell the story of a fortress built in the 12th century and fought over fiercely during the English Civil War.

You won't find manicured lawns or visitor centres here. The castle is essentially a free, open-access ruin that rewards a short walk uphill from the nearest access point. The tower itself is substantial enough to photograph and circle, and the views down into the Teme Valley justify the minor effort required to reach it. Most visitors spend thirty minutes to an hour here - enough to get the photographs and absorb the place without lingering.

This is genuinely worthwhile if you're into fortifications and early military history, particularly the English Civil War period when the castle was besieged and then slighted (deliberately damaged to prevent future use). Families with older children who enjoy a bit of a ramble will find it engaging enough, though younger kids may lose interest quickly once they've clambered about the ruins.
