Hooper's Field

Walking into Hooper's Field feels like stepping back in time - this is proper working countryside, the sort of place where you'll actually see what Wiltshire looked like before intensive farming took over. The nature reserve sprawls across meadowland that's managed to hold onto its original character, which means wildflowers in spring and early summer, and genuinely interesting bird life year-round.

You'll find yourself on paths that meander through open grassland rather than woodland, so there's nowhere to hide from the weather but equally nowhere to get lost. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour unless they're serious nature spotters - the appeal here is subtle rather than dramatic. But if you're into botanical stuff or you've got binoculars and a bird guide, you could easily spend a couple of hours poking about.

The nearest settlement is Botswicky Copse, which isn't much more than a hamlet, so you're genuinely out in the sticks. There's a Nordic Glamping site just down the road at Botswicky if you fancy basing yourself nearby - perfect if you want quiet mornings and evening walks without faff. Free admission as far as I can tell, which is refreshing. Best visited May through September when the flowers are actually doing something and the birds are less elusive. Don't expect facilities or a visitor centre - you need to be the sort of person who finds untamed grassland interesting rather than inconvenient.
