Hoolster Hill

There's a decent walk up Hoolster Hill if you're staying around Preston and fancy stretching your legs without committing to a full Pennine expedition. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a solid moorland bump - but the views across Lancashire's rolling terrain are genuine rewards on a clear day.

The ascent takes somewhere between 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace and which route you take. It's straightforward walking rather than scrambling, though the ground can be boggy in places so proper boots matter. On a decent afternoon you'll get proper views towards Pendle Hill and across the Ribble Valley. The plateau at the top is a fine spot for lunch.

This works well for families who've got confident walkers aged eight and up. Younger kids might find it a bit of a slog without much to do once you're there, but a motivated family will get a genuine sense of achievement. If you're staying at Beacon Fell View or Northwood Caravan Park - both within five miles or so - it's worth checking out as a half-day outing. Dale Hey Farm Touring Caravan Site is similarly close.

The actual logistics are tricky because there's no obvious visitor infrastructure. You'll need to drive in from Preston and find somewhere sensible to park near the hill itself - worth a quick recce before you head out with the family. Go midweek if you can. Weekends can get busier than you'd expect for somewhere this low-key. Worth your time if you've got a morning free, but don't rearrange your whole holiday around it.
