Long Dingle

Long Dingle is a proper woodland walk just outside Preston - the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss. It's a narrow, wooded ravine that runs through Lancashire's green belt, with a stream running through the middle and tall trees closing in overhead. You won't find dramatic viewpoints or heritage plaques here. What you get instead is a quiet walk through dense forest, the kind where you can actually hear yourself think.

The dingle itself takes about 20-30 minutes to walk through depending on your pace and whether you stop to poke about in the undergrowth. The path is fairly straightforward, though it can get muddy after rain - proper waterproof boots are essential in winter. It's good for families with kids who like exploring, walkers after a gentle stretch of the legs, or anyone after a bit of woodland peace without the crowds you'd get at a proper country estate.

Since it's essentially wild woodland, there's no visitor centre, no admission fee, and no fixed opening hours - you just turn up when you fancy. Go early on a weekday if you want it to yourself, or avoid weekends in summer.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Northwood or Dale Hey Farm are only a mile or so away - Long Dingle makes a decent morning's outing before heading somewhere with more facilities. It's not a day-tripper destination on its own, but it's brilliant if you're combining it with walking country around Preston or using Beacon Fell View as a base for exploring the wider Ribble Valley.
