Homerton Hill

The walk up Homerton Hill rewards you with proper moorland views across Dartmoor. It's not the highest point on the moor, but the exposed ridge walk there feels properly wild, especially when the clouds roll in from the west. Most visitors tackle it from near Okehampton, and you're looking at a solid couple of hours on foot to reach the summit and come back down again.

This is pure walker territory. Families with young kids will find the terrain boggy and the wind relentless, so leave the buggy at home. Proper hillwalkers, on the other hand, will appreciate the genuine moorland experience - no crowds, no facilities, just heather and stone and the occasional grouse. Take an Ordnance Survey map. Phone signal is patchy at best, and the weather can turn in minutes.

The park itself sits well for accessing this stretch of Dartmoor. Wear waterproof trousers and proper boots - the ground stays wet even after dry spells, and a slip here means a proper tumble.

Go early on weekday mornings if you want solitude. Weekends bring the mountain bikers out, which changes the atmosphere entirely. Free to visit, of course, and no gates to pass through. Just park sensibly and head out onto the moor.
