Home Grove

Walk into Home Grove and you're in proper woodland - the kind of place where the canopy closes in above you and the undergrowth swallows the path. It's a working forest east of Royston, so don't expect theme-park manicuring. You get native trees, decent trails that meander without faffing about, and the kind of quiet you can actually hear yourself think in.

This is walker territory. The forest floor's uneven in places and the trails aren't signposted like a country park, so come prepared with decent boots and maybe a map. You're looking at anything from a twenty-minute wander to a couple of hours depending on your mood and the route you choose. Families with young kids will manage it fine if they're used to proper walking - it's not a riverside stroll, but it's rewarding.

Worth knowing: opening hours and admission aren't clearly advertised online, so ring ahead or turn up during daylight and see what's what. If you're based at Pightle Farm Campsite down the road, it's close enough for a morning outing without eating half your day on the drive.

The woodland itself doesn't feel precious or over-managed. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you want from a forest walk. If you're after groomed paths and interpretive signs, look elsewhere. If you want actual trees and some proper woodland air, crack on.
