Holybourne Church Pond

The pond sits quietly just outside Alton, a proper little water meadow that hardly anyone seems to know about. It's a shallow, peaceful body of water fringed with reeds and willows - the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of car engines. There's no fanfare here, no visitor centre or coach parties. Just a nature reserve that feels genuinely wild despite being ten minutes from town.

You're looking at a cracking spot for birdwatchers and anyone who wants to slow down. The water attracts mallards, herons if you're lucky, and in the right season you'll hear frogs doing their thing. A gentle walk around the perimeter takes twenty minutes, and there are benches scattered about if you want to sit and stare at nothing for a bit. Families with young kids get maybe an hour out of it before the novelty of "look, a bird" wears off, but walkers and nature types will find themselves returning.

If you're staying at Wigwam Holidays just down the road - about three miles away - this is exactly the sort of morning or evening walk that breaks up a park holiday nicely. No admission charge, no opening hours to worry about. Wear decent shoes though; it can get boggy after rain, and the path isn't maintained like a formal park. Go early to avoid the chance of bumping into the occasional dog walker who treats it like their personal garden.

Real value if you're into quiet corners and actual wildlife. Bit of a non-event otherwise.
