Holy Trinity Church Salcombe

The church sits right on Salcombe's high street, impossible to miss as you wander down towards the harbour. Holy Trinity is a proper 14th-century building - all stone and stained glass - that tells you everything about how important this little port town once was. Inside, there's decent medieval woodwork and the usual Devon church fittings, but honestly, what catches you is how compact it all is. You're in and out in twenty minutes unless you're genuinely into ecclesiastical architecture.

It's not going to be a day-long stop. Salcombe itself is the real draw - the sailing, the beaches, the walk down to the estuary - and the church fits neatly into that if you're keen on grabbing a bit of local history. History buffs will appreciate the bones of the place; families with restless kids won't linger. The location, a stone's throw from Kingsbridge, makes it easy to combine with a proper walk or a cream tea.

Free entry, as far as anyone knows, though church opening hours can be unpredictable out of season. If you're based at Wilton Farm Camping or Karrageen - both top-rated spots a few miles inland - it's worth a fifteen-minute detour when you're down in town anyway. Don't plan your week around it, but if you're passing through Salcombe, duck in. You'll spend longer choosing a pasty afterwards than you will in the pews.
