Holy Trinity Church, Queenborough

The church sits at the heart of Queenborough, a modest medieval structure that rewards a closer look if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Sheerness. Holy Trinity has been standing since the 14th century, which alone tells you something about the place - it's survived centuries of coastal weather and the occasional flood, testament to some solid building work. Inside, you'll find the usual touchstones of an old parish church: timber roof, stone flags underfoot, a handful of memorials to people who lived and died when this was proper countryside instead of the sprawl surrounding it now. The chancel's worth lingering in, and the font catches afternoon light in a way that stops you mid-stride.

It's not a destination in itself - don't come to Queenborough expecting to spend three hours here. But it's exactly the sort of thing that makes sense during a park holiday, particularly if you're based at Shurland Dale or Ashcroft Coast. Twenty minutes wandering around, a quick look at the churchyard if the weather's decent, and you've got a genuine slice of Kent's medieval past without the crowds you'd deal with at bigger attractions. The nearby towns of Sheerness give you everything else - fish and chips, a decent walk along the seafront if the tide's out. Early morning or late afternoon is best if you want to avoid the few crowds that do turn up.
