Holy Trinity Church

The church sits on the main street of Haddington, a proper little market town that most people drive straight through without stopping. Holy Trinity is one of Scotland's finest parish churches - a 14th-century red sandstone building with a tower that dominates the High Street skyline. Inside, the light floods through tall windows across cream-coloured walls. The chancel is genuinely stunning: elaborate Victorian tiling, ornate wooden screens, and stained glass that catches the afternoon sun brilliantly.

This works best if you're already visiting Haddington for a wander around the town's independent shops and cafes. It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend more than 45 minutes here unless you're genuinely into medieval ecclesiastical architecture. The interior is peaceful, though, and it's worth the detour if you're staying at Haven Seton Sands Holiday Village just down the road. Families with kids under ten might find it a bit static, but older children who appreciate old buildings and church history will get something from it.

The town itself is far more interesting than most people expect. There are decent spots for lunch, the Georgian streetscape is charming without being twee, and Haddington makes a solid base for exploring East Lothian's coast and countryside. The church is free to enter during opening hours - check the website before you go, as times can be variable. Allow an hour in town if you want coffee and a proper look around.
