Glenkinchie Distillery

The smell hits you before you've properly entered the distillery - that warm, grainy sweetness of whisky in the making. Glenkinchie, tucked away in East Lothian's rolling farmland, is one of Scotland's few Lowland single malts, which means it's lighter and more delicate than the peaty Highland stuff people expect.

You get a proper tour of the place - see the copper stills, learn why water from the Lammermuir Hills matters, and find out what makes their spirit taste the way it does. The visitor centre has a small museum explaining the distillery's two-century history, which won't blow your mind but gives decent context. The tasting at the end is where it counts; they're generous with pours and the staff actually know their stuff.

It's not the most dramatic distillery visit - no mountains looming outside, no gothic ruins - but that's rather the point. Lowland whisky is about subtlety, and Glenkinchie rewards paying attention. Budget two hours. Families with older kids (teenager-plus) will manage fine; younger ones get bored once the gift shop novelty wears off.

Stay at Haven Seton Sands or Drummohr Camping if you're in the area for a few days. The distillery makes a solid rainy-afternoon diversion when walks aren't happening, and it's close enough to Haddington for lunch if needed. Worth the detour if you're genuinely interested in whisky; less so if you're just ticking boxes.
