Holy Trinity Church Boston

The tower of Holy Trinity Church dominates Boston's skyline so completely that you spot it from the car park before you've even left the vehicle. The Boston Stump, as locals call it, rises 272 feet and was built between the 14th and 15th centuries when this Fenland port was thriving on wool and trade. Step inside and the scale becomes properly apparent - the interior is vast, the light streams through windows that seem impossibly tall, and the decoration ranges from simple to ornate depending which way you look.

It's free to wander around, though donations are welcome. You'll need a good hour to actually take it all in rather than just gawp, particularly if you're into medieval craftsmanship or church architecture. The stonework and carvings reward close inspection. Families with younger children might find thirty minutes enough before restlessness sets in, though the sheer height of the nave does impress most ages.
