Holm House, Motte

A grass-covered mound on the outskirts of Inverness doesn't sound thrilling, but Holm House Motte is genuine medieval archaeology - what's left of a Norman fortification from around the 12th century. You're looking at an earthwork that would have supported a wooden palisade and tower in its day, commanding views across the flat lands towards the Moray Firth.

It's small and requires no entrance fee, which is the only way to justify a stop here honestly. Allow twenty minutes maximum, unless you're genuinely fascinated by motte-and-bailey construction. The site itself involves a short walk from the road and a gentle scramble up the mound - nothing strenuous. History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile; families with young kids might find five minutes more than enough. There's no facilities, no interpretation boards beyond basic signage.

What makes it worth knowing about is proximity to Inverness, particularly if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Go Glamping at Loch Ness is barely a mile away, and Bunchrew Caravan Park only three miles distant. It's the sort of place that slots into a morning drive before heading elsewhere. The Highlands have no shortage of proper medieval sites, but this one costs nothing and takes minutes. Realistic? It's a tick-box archaeology spot, not a destination in itself. Go if you're passing, skip it if you're short on time.
