Hollowscar Hill End

The walk up Hollowscar Hill End from Holmrook is short but punchy - you're looking at maybe an hour's climb depending on fitness. What you get at the top is proper Lake District fell country without needing the full fell-walker commitment. The views sweep across to the coast on clear days, and inland towards the higher peaks beyond. It's the kind of spot where you understand why people move to Cumbria and never leave.

This is absolutely one for walkers who want a real hill without getting into serious mountaineering territory. Families with older children will manage it fine. If your kids are under eight or you're after a gentle stroll with no elevation, look elsewhere.

Going from Fisherground Campsite makes perfect sense - it's only six miles away, so you could knock this out before breakfast if you're an early riser, or tackle it in late afternoon when the light's best. The fell gets proper weather, so choose a dry day. There's no visitor centre or facilities up top, just bracken and views and the wind in your ears.

Worth doing? Yes. Is it revolutionary? No. But it's the kind of walk that reminds you why you came to the Lakes in the first place - a bit of effort, some proper ground underfoot, and a genuine sense of having climbed something. That's enough.
