Hollesley Village Recreation Field

The Recreation Field at Hollesley is one of those places that sneaks up on you. It's a proper nature reserve on the Suffolk coast, just east of Woodbridge, where the landscape shifts between open grassland and scrubby woodland in a way that feels genuinely wild for East Anglia. You won't find manicured paths or visitor centres here - this is working conservation land where birdwatchers come to spot migrants and locals walk their dogs without fuss.

What makes it worth a visit depends entirely on what you're after. If you like birds, bring binoculars. The reserve attracts warblers, finches, and the occasional rarity that gets twitchers driving down from Norwich. Casual walkers will find it pleasant enough for a 45-minute amble, though it's not dramatically scenic - more understated Suffolk than showstopping views. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after a while.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as an add-on to a park holiday rather than a destination in itself. You're barely half a mile from Run Cottage Touring Park, which makes this ideal for a morning walk before breakfast. The proximity to Woodbridge also means you can pair it with a proper town day - lunch by the river, then a quiet afternoon here. Visit early if you're serious about birds; late morning onwards and it empties out nicely. Spring migration is probably the best time, though it's decent year-round for a straightforward walk.
