Hollerday Hill

The walk up Hollerday Hill takes you out of Lynton proper and into proper Devon countryside - all rolling moorland and sudden drops that catch you off guard. It's not a long hike, but it's steep enough to make your legs know about it, especially if you're coming straight from the coast.

Once you're at the top, the views justify the effort. You get the full sweep of the Exmoor plateau and, on a clear day, the Bristol Channel spreading out beyond. Walkers absolutely love this one - it's the kind of peak that feels rewarding without requiring you to be superhuman about fitness.

There's no visitor centre or facilities up here, so bring water and wear proper boots. Most people allow an hour and a half return trip, depending on pace. Go early if you can; midday brings the crowds, and the light's better in morning anyway.

If you're based at Lynmouth Holiday Retreat - just down the road - this makes an excellent morning walk before heading back for lunch. The route connects well with other trails across the moor, so you can easily string together a longer day if you're feeling ambitious. It's free, naturally, and works brilliantly alongside a broader Exmoor exploration. Families with decent walkers will manage it fine; younger kids might find it a bit of a slog on the way back down.
