Hollands Park

You'll find Hollands Park just outside Ilfracombe, a proper little nature reserve that punches above its weight if you know what to expect. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no crowds, no gift shops, just paths through mixed woodland and open ground with decent views towards the coast. The walk is straightforward enough for families, though it's not a stroll; there are some gentle inclines and the paths can get muddy after rain, so proper shoes are a must.

It works particularly well for walkers and birdwatchers who want something quieter than the honeypots around Ilfracombe itself. You won't spend all day here - an hour to 90 minutes covers it properly - but it's an excellent leg-stretcher between visits to other attractions in the area. The proximity to Newberry Valley, Sandaway Beach, and Watermouth Valley makes it ideal if you're camping nearby; you can squeeze it in before heading to the beach or a bigger attraction.

The reserve has that slightly wilder feel Devon does so well - less managed than some nature spots, which some will love and others might find a bit rough around the edges. Bring binoculars if you're keen on spotting wildlife. It's free to access and open year-round, though spring and autumn offer the best conditions underfoot and the most interesting birdlife. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks for a week, this is absolutely worth an afternoon visit, particularly if the weather's turned and you need something less exposed than the coastal paths.
