Hocker Holt

The woodland at Hocker Holt is the kind of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out - which makes it all the better. Just outside Horncastle, this modest forest offers proper walking country without the crowds you'd find at bigger nature reserves. The paths wind through a decent mix of broadleaf and conifer, and it's the sort of spot where you can actually hear yourself think.

Walkers will find it worth the detour, particularly those doing a longer loop through the Lincolnshire countryside. It's not dramatic - there are no sudden vistas or dramatic height gains - but that's rather the point. You get peace, trees, and a genuine sense of being away from it all. The terrain is manageable for most fitness levels, though muddy patches appear after rain. Allow an hour to ninety minutes if you're doing a proper walk; you can poke about for half that if you've only got limited time.

Families with older kids will get more from it than those with toddlers in buggies - the appeal is walking and nature-spotting rather than facilities or attractions. In autumn, when the light filters through the turning leaves, it's genuinely lovely.

If you're based at Wood Farm Camping or The Layby Lincs nearby, Hocker Holt makes an excellent morning or afternoon excursion. It's low-key enough that you won't feel you've wasted time if the weather turns, and the Horncastle market town is close by if you want to combine a walk with a browse of the shops.
