Hockenhull Platts Nature Reserve

A string of medieval packhorse bridges crosses the River Dee near Chester, and Hockenhull Platts is where three of them cluster together in one of Cheshire's quieter corners. It's proper peaceful - the kind of spot where you half expect to see someone in doublet and hose leading a laden pony across the water.

The reserve itself is small, maybe a thirty-minute walk if you're being leisurely about it. The real draw is those bridges: low stone arches built centuries ago when traders moved wool and salt between Wales and the Manchester markets. You can actually cross them, which beats looking at something behind a fence. The surrounding meadows are lovely in spring when the bluebells come through, and birdwatchers seem to know the place well enough - I'd spot them with binoculars scanning the river margins.

It's free to visit and open whenever you fancy (there's no gate stopping you). The walk is flat and straightforward, so families with young children will manage fine, though older kids might get restless once they've counted the arches and thrown a few stones. Historians will want to linger; casual ramblers less so.

Combine it with a longer walk along the Dee Valley if you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Little Pig is just 3.5 miles away and gets glowing reviews. Chester itself is close enough for an afternoon visit. On its own, Hockenhull Platts is a twenty-minute detour from the city, worth it if you're already exploring that stretch of river, but not a reason to make a special trip.
